2019 — A New Year a Better Me

As we approach the end of the year, I reflect back over what has happened this year and what next near will mean to me in regard to my life and mental health.

A Quick Summary of 2018

I’d rather not go in to some of the specifics so I’ll keep this as short as possible. 2018 didn’t start great for me and my family. I had a chest infection for the first 2 months and had to visit the doctors and go to hospital for x-rays. I’d never had a chest infection for that long so got quite worried. Luckily after a round of antibiotics it cleared up fine. There had been 2 deaths in the family which were sudden and came as quite a shock. My partner fell ill and has been on pain killer and 2–3 rounds of antibiotics since June. She’s awaiting an operation in the new year which can’t come around quick enough. Work has gone through a company shuffle with directors leaving and projects going with them. The benefit being I got to work and lead on a new project which is awesome and going really well. I don’t like change but got used to it as it was for the better.

My Mental Health

One thing that has been a struggle this year is my mental health. With so many bad things happen this year it was hard to stay positive so my anxiety/depression suffered.

Luckily I made some new friends from people that started at the company I work for. One in particular has helped me train in the gym at work. Not to say I got addicted to the gym, I did a 30 minute HIT session 4-5 days a week, but I really enjoyed it and found exercise really helped clear my brain. Previously I was only doing cardio by using spin bike and rowing machine. This became more of a chore and less enjoyable so it was a good change.

I decided to try and be more positive by doing nice things for people. I’ve always tried to put other peoples need first over my own so seeing other people happy made me happy.

The months that followed by and I saw a great improvement. I was less anxious about going out, had more confidence in myself. A win win.

A Year Almost Ended and a New Year to Start

With the year almost at an end I can say I’m more positive, fitter, both mentally and physically than I was at the beginning, a great position to be in ready for the new year.

Going into 2019 I want to try and be more social. This is one thing I’ve been terrible at over the last few years and I definitely think its held me back. I’m going to keep up with the gym and set goals for improvements I want to make.

I’m also getting married which will be amazing.

So in 2019 I want to be a better man than I was in 2018.

I hope your 2019 will be the best it can be and wish you all a happy new year!
